Sustainability is the capacity to endure. In environmental terms the word describes how biological systems remain diverse and productive over time. For humans, sustainability is the potential for long-term maintenance of well being, which has environmental, economic, and social dimensions. Eventually we will come to terms with the fact that humans are not separate from a nature or the ambiguous "environment." We are just as much a part of the local ecosystem as the trees and the whales we endeavor so wholeheartedly to protect. But this is our environment, too!! We need to think of protecting the planet in the same way we think about protecting our home, and realized that by acting locally within the scope of our ability, we can achieve significant progress in global sustainability.
